The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has advanced in the 2022 Green Future Index, issued by MIT Technology Review, a publication of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, one of the world's top universities. The Kingdom improved by ten ranks compared to last year, showing significant progress in many of the index's primary and sub-indicators.
The index report highlighted the Kingdom's improvement in the carbon emissions category, advancing 27 places to rank 19th globally. This progress was driven by the Kingdom's commitment to doubling its voluntary national contributions to reducing emissions by 278 million tons annually by 2030, more than double the 133 million tons per year previously announced in 2015.
In the energy transition category, the Kingdom improved by 12 ranks, reaching 12th globally, and achieved the first place in the sub-indicator for the growth of renewable energy production. This advance was led by the Kingdom's announcement to increase the share of renewable energy in the electricity production mix to approximately 50% by 2030.
In the third category, the green society, the Kingdom ranked 26th globally. Notable efforts in this area include SEEC, which has launched over 27 specifications and regulations to enhance energy efficiency in appliances and buildings. The Saudi Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standard was also adopted, and the National Energy Services Company (Tarshid) was established to implement energy efficiency projects in government buildings and facilities. Additionally, more than 10 million smart meters have been installed in electricity networks.
The Green Future Index is a relatively new measure that began issuing its annual report in 2021. It evaluates 76 countries based on their ability to develop a sustainable, low-emission future. The index measures these countries' economic transition towards clean energy in industry, agriculture, and society through investments in renewable energy, innovation, and green policies.
This achievement highlights the role of SEEC in promoting sustainability and realizing the Kingdom's vision of improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions, contributing to sustainable development and environmental protection
