SEEC continues to work on multiple initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions in the industrial sector across the Kingdom. These initiatives focus on setting requirements and targets to improve energy efficiency in energy-intensive industries, such as petrochemicals, cement, steel, and aluminium.
Since the implementation of these initiatives from 2011 to 2019, the industrial sector has seen significant improvements in energy intensity. The petrochemical sector recorded a 2.8% reduction, while the cement sector achieved a 2.8% reduction in energy intensity in cement production and a 4.2% reduction in clinker production. Additionally, the steel sector experienced a 2% reduction in energy intensity.
SEEC aims to achieve further savings in the industrial sector during its second cycle (2020-2025). These savings are expected to contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions, aligning with the Kingdom's efforts to address climate change challenges.
SEEC has developed mechanisms to set energy efficiency targets and requirements in the four main sectors: petrochemicals, cement, steel, and aluminium, which account for the majority of total energy consumption in the industrial sector of the Kingdom.
The initiatives of SEEC reflect the the Kingdom's commitment to environmental preservation and sustainable development by improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions in the industrial sector.
