Certified Energy Manager CEM

 

Who are Certified Energy Managers?

A Certified Energy Manager is an individual who optimizes the energy performance of a facility, building, or industrial plant. The CEM is a systems integrator for electrical, mechanical, process, and building infrastructure, analyzing the optimum solutions to reduce energy consumption in a cost-effective approach. CEM’s are often team leaders and help to develop and implement their organizations’ energy management strategies. CEM’s have gained increased recognition within the energy industry and by companies looking to strengthen their competitive position by having responsible energy strategies and sustainable operational practices.

 

What does the Certified Energy Manager (CEM®) Certification Program offer?

This program helps educate and qualify individuals involved in optimizing the use of energy in buildings and systems. By obtaining the CEM certification, candidates gain industry and peer recognition by demonstrating their understanding of energy-efficiency principles, practices, and technologies. The program raises the professional standards, both technical and ethical, of those engaged in energy efficiency and energy management

 

Objectives

-To raise the professional standards of those engaged in energy management

-To improve the practice of energy management by encouraging energy managers in a continuing program of professional development

-To identify persons with acceptable knowledge of the principles and practices of energy management related disciplines and laws governing and affecting energy managers through completing an examination and fulfilling prescribed standards of performance and conduct

-To award special recognition to those energy managers who have demonstrated a high level of competence and ethical fitness for energy management

 

Eligibility

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

Education

 

Experience

4-year engineering/architectural degree OR
Professional Engineer (PE) OR Registered Architect (RA)

AND

3+ years related* experience

4-year degree in technology, environmental science, physics, or earth science

AND

4+ years related* experience

4-year degree in business (or related field)

AND

5+ years related* experience

2-year energy management associate degree

AND

6+ years related* experience

2-year associate degree

AND

8+ years related* experience

NONE

AND

10+ years related* experience

 

*Related experience in energy engineering or energy management.

Energy Manager In-Training Option

If you do not meet one of the eligibility criteria above, you can still apply for the Energy Manager In-Training certification, EMIT. In order to gain the in-training certification, you must attend a CEM preparatory training seminar or obtain a degree from an approved training provider, submit the EMIT certification application under step two below, and pass the CEM certification examination. The EMIT certification is valid for six years, which allows you time to meet the full CEM certification eligibility requirements.

 

Requirements

All CEM candidates must attend a preparatory CEM training seminar conducted by an approved training provider, submit a CEM certification application, and pass an open book examination, which is proctored by an approved exam administrator.

An intensive jobs task analysis was performed for the CEM and a weighted percentage of topics was developed for the CEM Body of Knowledge. Although a specific number of exam questions for each topic will not be provided, as it may change, the number of questions on the exam will align with the content percentages listed in the following CEM Body of Knowledge.
