Saudi Energy Efficiency Center was established by the Council of Ministers decision No. 363 dated 24 Thu Al-Qiida 1431 A.H. that mandated the transfer of National Energy Efficiency and Rationalization Program (temporary) in King AbdulAziz City for Sciences and Technology to a permanent national center, in the line of the administrative organization of the city, called “Saudi Energy Efficiency City”, connected directly by City’s president. The Center is supervised by an administrative committee headed by president of King AbdulAziz City for Sciences and Technology, and membership of some concerned agencies.

In addition, a decision of council of ministers No. 16, dated 17/01/1433 A.H. was issued to approve Center’s organization, which included details for its tasks, and some articles on committee’s role and Center’s resources, in addition to adding number of agencies to Administrative Committee membership, to become as following:

Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Water and Electricity, Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs, Ministry Commerce and Industry, Ministry of Culture and Media, Ministry of Housing, Bureau of the customs, Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization, The Electricity & Cogeneration Regulatory Authority, Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, Presidency of Meteorology and Environment, Saline Water Conversion Corporation, King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy, National Committee for Clean Development Mechanism, ARAMCO, SABIC, and Saudi Electricity Company, in addition to representatives of private sector.

The Center aspires to raise rationalization awareness and enhance energy consumption efficiency, as well as unifies the efforts of governmental and non-governmental agencies in this field, which will contribute supporting and preserving the national wealth of energy resources, consequently which strengthens development and national economy, and achieves the lowest levels of possible consumption levels in comparison to the general national product and populations.

Center’s main works include:

  • Develop the policies, regulations, rules that organize energy consumption, supporting implementation as well.
  • Support concerned agencies’ complementarity efforts for enhancing energy consumption efficiency, coordinating between them as well.
  • Enhance social and official general awareness of energy rationalization field, increasing as well energy consumption efficiency.
  • Participate executing some pioneering projects that require Center’s participation.
